MILFORD, Mass. —

An immigration hearing is being held Thursday for a Milford, Massachusetts, high school student who was detained by federal officials last week as his friends rally for the 18-year-old's release.

Marcelo Gomes da Silva remains in a detention center in Burlington after he was detained Saturday for his undocumented status as he was on his way to volleyball practice. ICE has requested to move Gomes da Silva to a facility in Rhode Island.

Thursday's immigration hearing, which is being held in Chelmsford, will determine whether he can be released on bond.

His attorney, Robin Nice, told WCVB that the 18-year-old is sleeping on a cement floor and sharing one open toilet with about 40 others at the facility.
