SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WATE) — A Madisonville police officer shot a man who fired at officers in Sweetwater Thursday morning, according to a preliminary investigation from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Around 12:55 a.m. on Thursday, Monroe County deputies went to a home on the 100 block of Camp Hill Road after getting a report of a man "having a mental episode," the TBI wrote.

When deputies encountered the man, he brandished a weapon before retreating into the home, the TBI said. Law enforcement personnel tried to negotiate with him and eventually used tear gas to try to force him out of the home.
