The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is underway in Fort Worth, Texas, showcasing the talents of the world's best young classical pianists. This prestigious event, often referred to as the Olympics of the piano world, features 28 competitors selected from 340 applicants. The competition, held every four years, is a two-and-a-half-week celebration of musical excellence.
This year, six finalists are vying for top honors. Among them is 23-year-old Yanjun Chen, who has captured the hearts of her host family, Dr. Stephen and Michelle Maberry. The Maberrys have opened their home to Chen, providing her with a supportive environment as she navigates the pressures of the competition.
"Oh my gosh, it's wonderful. We love the arts. We love the music, and so waking up to hearing that or late night hearing it is fantastic," Michelle Maberry said, reflecting on the experience of hosting a talented pianist.
For their son, David Maberry, the experience has been nothing short of magical. "I wake up and the light is coming through my blinds, and it feels like a Disney movie when I wake up in the morning (with this music playing) … it's amazing," he shared.
Competitors like Chen maintain rigorous practice schedules, often dedicating hours to perfecting their pieces. "I try to pick sections that are difficult then try to practice them slowly and then get to a normal tempo or just imagining that I'm performing just running through the piece helps too," Chen explained.
When not rehearsing, Chen enjoys spending time with the Maberry family, who have embraced her as one of their own. "The mom just comes out in you … you just want to nurture them and take care of them and help them and do whatever it takes to help them succeed," Michelle Maberry said.
Chen's emotional performance in the first round earned her a standing ovation. After stepping off the stage, she took time to sign autographs and interact with fans, much to the delight of the Maberrys. "I was probably more nervous for her than she was," Michelle admitted. "I said you're going to do great. Good vibes, positive energy, and you know what? She knocked it out of the ball park."
Although Chen's journey in the competition ended in the semifinals, her passion for music remains strong. The Maberry family will cherish the melodies that filled their home, a lasting reminder of the extraordinary experience they shared.
