A contractor ruptured a water pipe at the BP Whiting Refinery this week.
The contractor hit a 12-inch water line in the J&L Tank Field on the east side of Calumet Avenue between 129th Street and 141st Street at the BP Whiting Refinery, which stretches along the Lake Michigan lakefront in Whiting, Hammond and East Chicago. A video provided to The Times showed a towering stream of water jetting high into the air by an excavator at the refinery, which supplies gasoline to seven Midwestern states.
The spill did not result in any pollution and did not disrupt the public's water service, Indiana Department of Environmental Management Public Information Officer Barry Sneed said. No toxic substances were spilled, and the spill was contained on site, he said.
