Officials at Citi Bike on Thursday were scrambling to figure out how to add speedometers to their popular e-bike fleet after Mayor Eric Adams announced plans to impose a citywide 15 mph speed limit on electric bicycles and scooters.
The mayor’s office announced the new rule Wednesday night, sparking concerns from officials at the country’s largest bike-sharing system, which includes 15,000 e-bikes.
Those e-bikes can travel up to 18 mph but currently lack speedometers that would allow a rider to know if they are exceeding the new speed limit.
A spokesperson for Lyft, which owns and operates Citi Bike, said the company was only informed of the plan by the city transportation department on Tuesday. The company was never invited to discuss the rule with the mayor’s office, the spokesperso
