The Humane Society of Catawba County's Executive Director Jane Bowers was fired from her role leading the animal care organization Wednesday, according to a social media post from the Humane Society Thursday.

Board member Jodi Buckland, who served as secretary of the board, resigned voluntarily Wednesday night after the organizational shakeup, the post said.

Former employees raised concerns publicly about Bowers’ leadership, the working environment at the humane society and animal welfare in March.

An online petition was started in April. The petition called for the removal of Bowers and Director of Clinical Services Emily Buckland, the resignation of board members, an overhaul of leadership and more oversight of the organization.

The petition drew more than 2,900 signatures.
