SALADO, Texas (KBTX) - Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 2 into law Wednesday, providing what he and other supporters called a historic investment in Texas public education.

The law, passed during the 89th legislative session, includes $8.5 billion in new funding for public schools, with $4.2 billion dedicated to permanent teacher and staff pay raises.

“Texas is number one in so many categories,” Gov. Abbott said during the ceremony at Salado Middle School. “Texas should be number one in educating our children.”

Backed by a crowd of more than 175 educators, students, lawmakers, and parents; Gov. Abbott said the bill will strengthen classroom performance, improve math and reading outcomes, and help prepare students for the workforce.
