The Hobart City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to give final approval to an ordinance that lets more city residents keep chickens on their properties.

Hobart's code of ordinances currently mandates that chicken coops be placed at least 200 feet from a neighbor's home, effectively banning the animals from many of the city's smaller lots.

The new ordinance allows residents not able to meet that distance requirement to keep chickens if they abide by certain restrictions: Roosters are banned along with ducks and other types of domestic fowl and no more than four chickens are allowed per parcel.
