The sister of a man who is serving time a Gatesville prison said that he was assaulted and then prevented from contacting his family in Nolanville. The assault, which the Herald has confirmed did occur, happened on May 17. The family found out the next day from an inmate.

“He said that we needed to get in touch with the warden and the chaplain because something bad happened to my brother,” said Keria Degrate, of Nolanville. She spoke with the Herald on May 29 about her 45-year-old brother Renard Glenn Vaughn. He has been in the Alfred Hughes Unit for the past 11 years after being convicted of six felonies in McLennan County in 2014. “He has a tablet because of good behavior, so he used to call often. We knew something was wrong because he hadn’t called for three days.” ×
