(WENY) -- While some wild animals like fox cubs, raccoons, or lost pets may look cute, they have the potential to spread rabies. The Tioga County (New York) Public Health Department said the best way to prevent rabies is to stay away from unfamiliar animals.
Rabies can affect both humans and animals, and while it's preventable, it can be fatal if left untreated.
What do you do if you see an unfamiliar animal?
- Do not touch, hold, or try to catch it
- Use caution and try to avoid the animal
- If the animal is in your backyard, go inside
- If the animal is acting aggressive, call 9-1-1
