WASHINGTON — With partisanship dominating nearly every debate on Capitol Hill, one Maryland congressman believes legislation on pets may be an unlikely bridge between the political extremes.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Montgomery County Democrat, is reviving a piece of legislation that he says both Republicans and Democrats can get behind — the Bring Animals Relief and Kibble Act , better known as the BARK Act.

The goal is to make it easier for stores to donate expired—but still perfectly usable—pet food and supplies to animal shelters without fear of liability.

“It’s helping shelter animals get food and supplies that they need,” Raskin said. “Especially at a time where shelters across the country are facing rising operation costs, it should be bipartisan common sense.”
