CONCORD, N.H. —

Lawmakers in the New Hampshire House voted overwhelmingly Thursday in favor of a bell-to-bell ban on cellphones in schools.

On a vote of 314-42, New Hampshire state representatives approved a ban on cellphones for students for the entire school day, with limited exceptions for special education, medical and language needs.

"Ninety percent of NEA members support a policy prohibiting cellphone use during instructional time, and 83% support prohibiting the use of cellphones during the entire school day," said state Rep. Melissa Litchfield, R-Brentwood.

While the ban passed with broad bipartisan support, Democrats previously voted against it in committee and voiced concerns on the House floor about the lack of flexibility in the bill.
