MARTINSBURG – Going forward, the Berkeley County Commission is looking to implement impact fees in an effort to ask more from developers, rather than taxpayers, to help fund infrastructure.
Impact fees are one-time charges imposed on developers by local governments to help fund local infrastructure. The hope is that if implemented, the fees would help fund local schools, as well as items like additional police officers, firefighters and parks and rec projects.
“I think this is something that our constituents in Berkeley County have been asking for,” Commissioner John Hardy said. “This is direct growth paying for growth. I think this is a revenue stream the county can use for our growth without going to put taxes on our property owners.”
