MONTGOMERY, W.Va. (WCHS) — The city of Montgomery is working now to secure funds to haul off the remaining rubble left on the Montgomery High School site that caught fire in 2022.
Since the fire, it has been a challenge for the city to come up with the funds to tear down and dispose of what is left of the old school, so they are now working with the Brownfields Assistance Centers at both Marshall University and West Virginia University to seek out grant funding.
“This has been a real challenge," Montgomery Mayor Greg Ingram said. "I know that the community doesn’t understand that it’s going to be close to $1 million to clean it up because all the debris has asbestos in it and has to be hauled to Kentucky.”
