JOHNS ISLAND — A real estate group is hoping to repurpose a long-abandoned property once used for packing tomatoes into a commercial and industrial complex.
The former DiMare packing facility, on Main Road behind the popular Stono Market & Tomato Shed Café, has been vacant for roughly 15 years.
Currently owned by GHP Main LLC, the 16-acre property with two buildings and a rusty fence could soon be sold to a Miami-based real estate firm.
The site first needs to be deemed abandoned so the buyer, Obelisk Real Estate Partners, can receive the S.C. Income Tax Credit under the state’s Abandoned Buildings Revitalization Act , which offers financial incentives to investors that rehabilitate empty or underutilized buildings.
