NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Some students at Benjamin Franklin Elementary can now see things a bit more clearly.
On Thursday morning, 150 students received free eye exams and glasses as part of a collaboration between 100 Black Men of America Inc. and the VSP Eyes of Hope Mobile Clinic.
VSP says it's critical that children get annual eye exams due to how important visual learning is in schools, so the goal is to also make sure anyone has the ability to check their eyes check out.
"These mobile units, what they do is break down barriers of income. We respond to areas of disasters, and also distance. Some people are in rural areas, health care deserts, where they can't really access eye exams, so our mobile vans go to all of those areas to provide the care," said Dr. Jarrett Johnson.
