LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The most recent CDC data shows that in 2021, more than 50 percent of children across the U.S. received free or reduced school lunches.
But that need for food doesn’t end when students are out for summer break.
In Kentucky, school nutrition directors are working to ensure children in their area don’t have to go to bed hungry.
“We are very passionate about what we do. We want to make sure we see those kids smile. We want them to thrive and to have the opportunities, and when you’re hungry, it’s difficult,” said Michelle Coker, child nutrition director at Fayette County Public Schools.
Coker said they’ll be providing warm meals to kids across 35 different locations.
