COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The U.S. Army, older than the nation it defends, is a week away from marking 250 years in existence. And there are a variety of events on and off Fort Benning, leading up to the big day.

The U.S. Army was established on June 14th, 1775 - more than a year before the Declaration of Independence. The central theme for this 250th birthday celebration is “This We’ll Defend,” highlighting the commitment of Soldiers and civilians to defend our nation, while looking back on its history of service and sacrifice.

Fort Benning is a big part of that legacy, for more than 100 years now. And the post is helping to host a number of events, starting with the Army 250th Birthday 5K Run this Saturday, June 7 through Uptown Columbus, starting at 7:45am at 11th street and Broadway.
