BOSTON —

A Belmont, Massachusetts, man accused of wielding a hatchet in a road rage incident appeared in Boston Municipal Court for a dangerousness hearing Thursday.

Andrew Oprian, 27, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (hatchet) and malicious destruction of property over $1,200, after surveillance video captured a man, who police say is Oprian, vandalizing a vehicle with a hatchet after initiating a chase of the driver through Boston, police said.

The incident happened the night of May 17 near the area of 1032 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston.

"At about 11:40 p.m. May 17, Oprian and a second motorist, the eventual victim, were driving down Commonwealth Avenue when the victim attempted to pass Oprian, who was driving 10 mph and swerving back and forth," Suffolk County District
