COLD SPRING, Minn. — It took an extra seven, nailbiting innings but Moorhead finally ended its 35-year high school baseball state tournament drought.

The Spuds rebounded from a loss in the first Section 8-4A championship game on Thursday to edge St. Michael-Albertville 4-3 in the second, deciding game of the double-elimination tournament to win the section title.

Moorhead (13-10 overall) advances to a Minnesota state baseball tournament for the first time since 1990 and for the fifth time in program history. Before the 1990 berth, the Spuds last earned a state berth in 1968.

The Class 4-A state tournament opens with quarterfinals games at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, at CHS Field in St. Paul. The 4-A championship game is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at
