WHITEWATER, Wis. (WKOW) -- Special Olympics Wisconsin opened its Summer Games Thursday night with a parade of the athletes and the opening ceremony.

The competitions begin Friday with soccer, cornhole, and track & field. They'll continue into Saturday.

Organizers say the athletes work hard to get to this event. They've been training all year long, and have to go through other competitions to get here.

"It's divisioned very similar to WIAA," Addie Teeters from Special Olympics Wisconsin told 27 News. "However, for all of the athletes, the parents, everybody who has really gotten them to this point, it's the epitome. This is our Super Bowl."

More than 1,200 athletes are expected to participate.

There are also about 400 volunteers and thousands of people coming to support the athletes.
