LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - On Monday, a bill that would have offered an alternative to the STAAR test died with the end of the 89th Texas legislative Session.

“I just think it wasn’t enough time for the House and the Senate to work out the details, the idea was great, Dr. Igor Gusyakov, Diboll ISD’s superintendent, said.

For years the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR has been a debate among many. The assessment evaluates student learning and teacher’s performance.

“Administering a four-to-five-hour test is tiring. Even for adults, if you are taking a certification test to become a teacher, a principal, or a superintendent, it’s a four to five hour test it’s exhausting. So for a child to focus and do well on a four to five hour test it’s exhausting, Gusyakov said.
