A new Covid-19 strain has arrived in the UK, NB.1.8.1, with recent reports detecting the first cases in England earlier today (6th June).

It was first discovered in January, before arriving in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland earlier this month.

In total, at least 22 countries have reported cases, including Australia, Thailand, China and the USA.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified NB.1.8.1 as a "variant under monitoring" due to rate of spread around the world.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), has said the proportion of sequenced Covid samples linked to NB.1.8.1 has jumped from just 3.7% to 33.3% in the last five weeks.

Overall, NB.1.8.1 accounts for around 10% of all global cases of Covid-19.
