Hurley senior Landon Adkins will compete in the final track and field meet of his high school career this weekend and he has a chance to do something special.
Really special.
You see, Hurley has never had a state champion in any sport – male or female – according to the Virginia High School League’s online record book and time is running out for that to happen for the small Buchanan County school.
Southern Gap High School is scheduled to open for the 2026-27 school year when Hurley, Grundy and Twin Valley consolidate.
Adkins has a legitimate shot of getting that long-awaited gold at the VHSL Class 1 meet at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
He enters the event seeded second in the boys discus with a top throw of 163-02. Nielson McMinn of Middlesex is the favorite.
