Auburn won its seventh straight VHSL Region 1C softball title on Thursday, but not before the Eagles got all they could handle from the George Wythe Maroons.
GW led after 3 ½ innings but couldn’t hold on in dropping a 4-2 decision to its longtime nemesis.
The Maroons (8-13) scored twice in the top of the first inning as Morgan Layne connected for a two-run double that plated Caroline Harris and Emma Faulkner for the 2-0 advantage.
That was all the runs GW would get against Auburn pitcher McKenzie Booth, who tossed a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks.
Hope Wilson and Samantha Anderson homered in the fourth inning for the Eagles with Anderson’s clout giving the Eagles the lead for good.
