CARMEL – Putnam County Sheriff Kevin McConville, who decided this week not to seek reelection to his second four-year term in November due to ill health, has resulted in the race for the county’s top lawman position up in the air.

McConville received the Republican and Conservative Party nominations but his decision to withdraw may put the GOP in a difficult position as the deadline for filing a petition to get on the ballot for the November general elections has passed. The Democrats, who did not nominate a candidate, face the same challenge.

The only candidate currently on the ballot is Lawrence Burke, former officer-in-charge of the part-time Cold Spring Police Department who is running as an independent candidate under the Serve & Protect Party line.
