OTTAWA COUNTY, MI -- Court records show a man used a rifle when he fired through the floor of an Ottawa County home’s upstairs, unintentionally killing a teen below.

The details of the shooting are contained in a transcript of a brief probable cause hearing held before Ottawa County District Judge Judy Mulder.

Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies said they believe alcohol was a factor when Westen Meulenberg, 20, allegedly fired shots during a May 9 party at a Tallmadge Township house.

Deputies responded to the house, in the 10700 block of Second Avenue, about 11:10 p.m.

They found 19-year-old Connor Lotterman , a Grand Valley State University student, gravely wounded. He later died.
