Something went haywire in the Michigan state prison system, where inmates figured out workarounds for some of the roughly 24,000 tablet computers available for purchase at $39.99. The tablets are intended for approved educational programs and games.

Although inmates are supposed to be barred from internet access, some discovered ways to bypass the restrictions. This led to “criminal enterprise activity,” including watching pornography and communicating with people on the outside, including suspected gang members, Beth LeBlanc of The Detroit News reports.

The News reports that the Michigan Department of Corrections tightened its controls on electronic devices in state prisons this week after uncovering the issue.
