SANDSTONE TWP., MI — An 86-year-old Jackson County bridge has been shut down.

The Jackson County Department of Transportation issued an emergency closure on Tuesday, June 3, of the Benn Road Bridge between Gardner and Stepladder roads in Sandstone Township.

The bridge is west of Jackson and northwest of Dearing and County Farm roads.

Based on a recent inspection, structural engineers have determined the bridge must be closed due to excessive and rapid deterioration. The bridge was originally built in 1939.

JCDOT engineers are exploring and evaluating cost effective options to replace the bridge as soon as possible, the department announced on social media.
