PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Attorney John Dorsey has been selected to become a judge at Rhode Island U.S. Bankruptcy Court, meaning he will step down as one of the two lawyers currently running the cash-strapped Providence Place mall.

Dorsey is expected to fill an upcoming vacancy created by Judge Diane Finkle, who's expected to retire in September. He is well-known for his years of helping businesses go through the process of receivership, a state-level version of bankruptcy.

Unlike U.S. District Court judges, who must receive presidential appointments, bankruptcy judges are appointed by the U.S. Court of Appeals. U.S. 1st Circuit Chief Judge David Barron announced the selection of Dorsey on Thursday.
