LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The Salvation Army of Louisville made stops across the city today to drop off delicious baked goods. It’s an act of kindness, of course, but it carries a long history that dates back to World War I.

National Donut Day was started in 1983, but its origins began much earlier, during the First World War.

The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” traveled to the front lines in WWI in 1917.

While there, they provided essential supplies and made donuts for troops to boost morale. Sometimes, according to the Salvation Army, the soldiers even used their helmets to deep fry the treats.

The tradition continues as a means to continue feeding those who need it, including those who live in poverty and suffer from food insecurity.
