CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. —

A call about a suspicious person lying on the side of the road led to a shootout involving a deputy in South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

SLED officials say a Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a 911 call on May 30 about a suspicious person and found a man lying on the side of the road who matched the description.

As the deputy approached, the armed man shot at the deputy and ran away, according to SLED.

SLED said the shot struck the deputy’s patrol vehicle, and the deputy was not injured.

They said a K9 tracked and found the man near the woods, and during an exchange of gunfire, the K9 and the man were both shot.

The man was taken to the hospital and remains there for treatment.
