Former Rep. David Jolly, who left the Republican Party during Donald Trump’s first term, announced Thursday that he is running for governor of Florida – as a Democrat.
“Something is happening in the state of Florida,” Jolly says in his launch video . “People want change.”
The former congressman, who registered with his new party earlier this year, is the first major Democrat to enter the race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. He will start off as a decided underdog, though, in what was once one of the nation’s premier swing states but has become reliably red in recent election cycles.
In his launch video, Jolly says the Sunshine State is facing affordability and education crises that he hopes to take on if elected next year.
“We can be a state that says we will fi
