WASHINGTON, Iowa (KCRG) - Police in Washington say officers recovered two handguns near Washington High School last month.
The department says on May 30, it received a report from a citizen who had found two handguns under a tree near the school’s baseball field.
Officers located both guns and determined neither contained ammunition.
During the investigation, school surveillance video indicated the firearms had been left on the property since May 22.
“The presence of firearms near a school causes concern for everyone,” said Washington Chief of Police Jim Lester. “The officers who responded quickly determined that neither handgun contained ammunition and posed no immediate danger. We take every incident involving a weapon seriously and our investigation is ongoing with an arrest imminen
