OTTAWA — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his attendance at the upcoming G7 meeting in Kananaskis, Canada, this month. He received an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which he accepted enthusiastically.

In a statement on social media, Modi expressed optimism about the relationship between India and Canada. He stated, “As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

Modi also mentioned that he had a phone conversation with Carney, during which he congratulated him on his recent election victory. This meeting comes at a time when relations between India and Canada have been strained.

Tensions escalated in 2023 following the assassination of a local Sikh leader outside the Guru Nanak Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the House of Commons, stating there was credible evidence suggesting that agents of the Indian government were involved in the murder.

The upcoming G7 summit presents an opportunity for both leaders to discuss these issues and work towards improving bilateral relations. More updates are expected as the summit approaches.
