A trade body for private hire drivers has urged all Glasgow’s MSPs to back its call to keep the cap on the number of vehicles working in the city.
Business leaders have pushed for the limit on cab numbers to be removed to boost the night-time economy — and ride-hailing app Uber is also in favour of the change.
But the Scottish Private Hire Association believes the policy is preventing the market from becoming oversaturated. Edward Grice, the Glasgow branch convenor, says lifting the cap would have “severe, unintended consequences” for drivers’ earnings and public safety.
The city’s licensing committee has rejected hundreds of bids for private hire car licences over the past year as the current 3450 vehicle limit has been reached.
