Greensboro Councilman Zack Matheny received support from his colleagues as he faced insults and claims of conflict of interests and ethical violations at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Matheny has long been the subject of scrutiny over his dual role as both an elected official and the president of Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI), the downtown economic development group which receives funding from the city.

The matter came to a head at Tuesday’s council meeting, when two downtown business owners, Eric Robert and Sidney Gray, made the case for why their properties should be removed from the Business Improvement District.
