OTTAWA — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his attendance at the upcoming G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, following an invitation from Prime Minister Mark Carney. The summit is scheduled to take place from June 15 to 17.
In a statement on social media, Modi expressed optimism about the future of India-Canada relations, stating that the two nations will collaborate with "renewed vigour." This announcement comes at a time when diplomatic tensions between Canada and India have escalated significantly.
The strain in relations began after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that agents of the Indian government were involved in the assassination of a Canadian citizen in 2023. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent activist advocating for Sikh separatism, was shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023.
In connection with Nijjar's death, four Indian nationals have been charged, further complicating the diplomatic landscape. Modi's acceptance of the G7 invitation signals a potential thaw in relations, despite the ongoing tensions.
The G7 summit will provide a platform for leaders to discuss various global issues, and Modi's participation may open avenues for dialogue between India and Canada.
