MADISON (WKOW) -- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously against the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development in a case involving unemployment taxes.
Back in 2024, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Catholic Charities is not exempt from paying unemployment taxes because the charity's operations are not primarily religious.
Churches in Wisconsin do not have to pay unemployment taxes.
The Catholic Charities Bureau appealed the State Supreme Court's decision all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Catholic Charities remains a separate entity from the Catholic Church. While it doesn't proselytize or hold services, it provides a number of services to those in need — regardless of faith.
