Columbus, Ohio (WSYX) — A former Franklin County sheriff’s deputy, Matthew Carey, 28, of Grove City, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to depriving an inmate of his civil rights.

Carey admitted to violating the inmate's right to be free from a deputy’s deliberate indifference to a substantial risk of serious harm while acting under color of law.

Court documents revealed that in March 2022, Carey intentionally disclosed a pretrial detainee’s pending charge of rape of a minor to another pretrial detainee, Gmier McCall. Carey was aware that revealing the victim's charges posed a substantial risk of assault by other inmates, which subsequently occurred.
