Newburyport police are investigating after a police cruiser hit a 13-year-old boy outside of his middle school on Thursday.
The city’s police and fire departments responded to a report from Rupert A. Nock Middle School at around 2:30 p.m., according to a statement from police.
An initial investigation found that the police cruiser, which was not responding to an emergency, hit the middle school student while he was crossing Low Street in front of the school.
Witnesses said the boy came out from between two parked cars and ran across the street in front of the cruiser. The investigation suggested the officer had no warning and could not have avoided the accident. Police said the officer immediately provided aid to the student with other first responders.
