COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County first enacted the Transportation Penny Tax program to fund projects across the county's 11 Council Districts in 2012 after residents voted for its approval. Money collected through a 1 percent sales tax funds upgrades to transportation infrastructure, improvement of access and safety for pedestrians, the creation of greenways and bikeways, and the expansion of public transit.

In a November 2024 referendum, the majority of Richland Count residents voted to extend the Penny Tax for 25 years, or until a maximum revenue of $4.5 billion is collected, whichever comes first.

Now, County Council wants residents to attend an event focused on the positive impact of the Penny Tax is having now and in the future.
