CALERA, Ala. (WIAT) -- A Calera Elementary School teacher was indicted on sex abuse charges, according to Calera police.
Heather Ozment, 49, of Calera, was indicted on charges of first-degree sex abuse, second-degree sex abuse and enticing child to enter vehicle, house, etc., for immoral purposes.
Calera Police Chief David Hyche says the alleged conduct occurred after school hours with teenagers and not at a school facility.
"Allegations involving sexual misconduct with minors must be investigated immediately, thoroughly, and methodically. Nothing we do in law enforcement is more important than protecting the most vulnerable in our community," Chief Hyche wrote in a statement announcing the indictment.
Shelby County Schools have placed Ozment on administrative leave.
