Service Oklahoma has issued an alert about a nationwide smishing scam targeting Oklahomans with text messages about "unpaid traffic violations and fines."
The texts purport to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles, an agency the state of Oklahoma does not have, and point recipients to websites that contain "oklahoma.gov" or "ok.gov" somewhere in the URL.
The warning from Service Oklahoma, the state agency responsible for providing driver and motor vehicle services, went out Friday morning. The agency in a news release said they were made aware of messages claiming recipients have unpaid traffic violations that must be resolved immediately to avoid penalties.
