COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A new Georgia law offers hope for domestic violence victims, part of it involving changes in punishment.

It’s called the Survivor Justice Act. It’s designed to help victims of abuse as they go through the court system, and it can help reduce sentences for survivors already serving time in prison.

It’s justice for survivors, essentially that’s what this bill is all about, giving victims of crimes like sex trafficking or domestic violence, protection if they had to protect themselves in order to survive or escape abuse. The best thing about this new law is that it’s retroactive.

With this new law, survivors of abuse can present evidence of past abuse to get reduced sentences, even if they’ve already been convicted.
