Ryan Mayer’s focus is unflappable on the mound. Mayer locks in on the batter. He’s moved on from the last pitch whether it was an out or hit.

There’s no question that Mayer, a senior, is the ace of Wallkill’s staff with a 6-3 record and ERA of less than 2.00. Mayer has won half of the Panthers’ 12 victories. He wants the ball in big games and big situations. Proof was the lefty’s complete-game, six-hitter with eight strikeouts in Wallkill’s 2-1 win over Cornwall for the school’s third straight Section 9 title.

“I always had the ability to stay calm and not get nervous,” Mayer said. “For most of the big games, I’ve always been able to keep my nerves pretty well in check and not get overwhelmed and stay within myself.”
