Bonnie J. Burton has been knitting since she was 4 years old and now she is working to promote the craft as owner of the new Colorful Stitches Fine Yarn shop in Merchants Square.

A native of Northern Virginia, Burton operated Colorful Stitches in Massachusetts for 17 years before she and her husband, Neal, relocated to Williamsburg last year to be closer to family. She held a soft opening for the new store — located at 409 W. Duke of Gloucester St. adjacent to The Shoe Attic — in April. A grand opening is set for June 10.

“Knitting has always been a part of my life,” she said. “It’s a creative outlet and a nice way to relax.”
