PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - The Peoria Riverfront became the scene of a deadly crime on Tuesday, but it didn’t deter people from continuing to enjoy the area.

Tuesday afternoon, Peoria police officers responded to the riverfront for a shooting where they found an 18-year-old shot in the back of the head. OSF St. Francis hospital staff pronounced her brain-dead Wednesday evening.

The shooting was unusual for this typically peaceful and active part of downtown.

Thousands of Peoria natives and visitors walk the riverfront to enjoy the view and different events held by the Peoria Park District throughout the year. Peoria Park District staff said safety is fundamental to providing an enjoyable outdoor experience.
