CHICAGO, IL — A 36-year-old police officer, Krystal Rivera, was shot and killed while on duty in Chicago, ABC News reports .

Rivera, a mother to a young daughter, was a four-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker expressed his condolences, emphasizing Rivera's dedication to her work. "There's no higher calling than the work to keep Illinoisans safe -- and Krystal lived that value day in and day out," Pritzker said on social media. "My condolences to her family and loved ones. May her memory be a blessing."

The shooting occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday during an investigatory stop. Officers approached a male suspect who fled into a nearby building, police said.
