CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A storm siren at Cannon Park in Carterville was recently damaged by a lightning strike. The city is working to replace it with a new unit soon.
Temporary repairs have restored limited functionality. The siren now operates at a reduced volume and cannot rotate, which reduces its effectiveness, the Carterville Fire Department said. It will still activate during emergency weather conditions.
The Carterville Fire Department reminds the public, tornado sirens are meant to be heard outdoors, signaling individuals to go indoors immediately. When heard, seek shelter and check local television, weather radio, or online sources for further updates.
